ABOUT THE RESORT
Welcome to the Andes Mountains of Argentina! Cerro Castor is the southernmost city and ski resort in the world, located just 26 km from Ushuaia, Argentina, offering a unique “end of the world” skiing experience with panoramic views of the Andes and the Beagle Channel. Cerro Castor is a family run resort located on the island of Tierra del Fuego (meaning Land of Fire).
You have the option of staying at the base of the resort or in Ushuaia. Most skiers and snowboarders prefer staying in Ushuaia, since there are plenty of great restaurants for dining nightly, shops, cafes, ski stores, casinos, and a vibrant nightlife!
SKI SEASON
The season in Cerro Castor is from mid-June through mid-October. Cerro Castor boasts the longest season in all the Andes, since storms roll in from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Antarctica. The skiing at Cerro Castor is very unique, considering the base elevation is only 640 feet. The weather can be pretty wild, but with storms coming in from all directions, you are bound to have a powder day or two during your visit to this exciting family-run resort. From the top of this resort, one can look towards the Bay of Ushuaia and Beagle Canal in the south or north towards the Chilean border.
THE MOUNTAIN
Being in the 54 parallel, the temperatures are lower and constant, which gives the best kind of snow precipitations similar that can be found in Moscow, Russia. The resort sits on the southern slopes of Mount Krund, ranging from a base elevation of 195 meters to a summit of 1,057 meters, offering an impressive vertical drop of over 800 meters. The terrain spans approximately 650 hectares, featuring around 35 runs catering to all skill levels: beginners, intermediates, advanced, and experts. It has a modern lift system with 12 lifts, including chairlifts and magic carpets, ensuring minimal wait times. The resort also features a snow park, a ski cross circuit, and areas for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. An extensive artificial snowmaking system guarantees optimal conditions throughout the season.
ACCOMMODATIONS & CUISINE
On-site accommodation at the base of the mountain is limited to the Castor Ski Lodge, a complex of 15 self-contained Patagonian-style cottages, typically available for week-long stays. Most visitors opt to stay in the nearby vibrant city of Ushuaia, which offers a wide range of lodging options, from basic hostels to luxury 5-star hotels like the Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa. Shuttle services run regularly between the city and the resort.
For dining, the resort has eight gastronomic points, including on-mountain huts and base-area restaurants, serving both local Patagonian cuisine (like regional lamb and seafood) and international dishes. Options range from self-service cafeterias to à la carte dining with stunning views. Popular spots include the busy Restaurante 480 and the gourmet Terrazas del Castor, which offers a unique “Snow & Sushi” bar. Wonderful dining options abound that serve up everything from Centolla (king crab) to Cordero (lamb), and Sushi that melts in your mouth.
NIGHTLIFE
The après-ski scene at Cerro Castor is more low-key and relaxed than a vibrant party atmosphere, often centered around cozy on-mountain bars and sun decks where guests can enjoy a local craft beer or hot chocolate by the fire. Evening entertainment often takes place back in Ushuaia, which has a variety of bars, pubs, and a few casinos to explore. Special events at the resort can include a festive Torchlight Descent and gastronomic tastings.
PERKS
The main perks of Cerro Castor include its unique geographical location as the world’s southernmost ski resort, the guarantee of excellent snow quality and a remarkably long season due to its orientation and climate. Its modern facilities and uncrowded slopes (especially on weekdays) make it a favorite destination for international high-performance ski teams for pre-season training. Beyond skiing, visitors can enjoy additional activities like ice skating and explore the stunning natural beauty of Tierra del Fuego National Park or take a cruise on the Beagle Channel. The city of Ushuaia provides nonstop excitement, from its numerous adventure activities to its casinos, award-winning restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and museums.
